People for Community Recovery’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of residents living in communities affected by environmental pollution. PCR educates and advocates policy and programs in an effort to coordinate local residents on issues of the environment, health, housing, education, training, neighborhood safety and economic equity.

We are thrilled to invite a dynamic communications manager to join our team and help guide our external and internal communications strategy as PCR’s programs, advocacy and organizing work expands. The ideal candidate is strategic, creative and flexible with a minimum of three years’ experience in strategic communications. The communications manager will work closely with our deputy director to create and implement our communications strategy to support program, outreach, education, and fundraising efforts. The ideal candidate has experience with environmental justice organizing along with a strong communications management background and working knowledge of digital and social media platforms.

Primary Duties:

  • Work with program staff to develop strategic communications plans for organizing educational and fundraising campaigns

  • Create content for social media, website, email-blasts and press releases

  • Represent PCR at appropriate coalition meetings and coordinate with campaign partners

  • Develop and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders including reporters and organizational allies

  • Attend community meetings, forums and special events online and in person when it is safe to do so

  • Track and assess communications metrics and impact

  • Coordinate with volunteers, may oversee interns and junior staff

  • Maintain member database and organization website

  • Support fundraising efforts including writing projects such as grants, annual reports, online appeals and more

Qualifications (Must Have):

  • Mission-driven and passionate about social justice

  • Three years of experience working in strategic communications

  • Ability to be flexible and work in fast-paced environment

  • Self-starter with ability to work collaboratively

  • Some evening availability

  • Ability to work with diverse populations

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have):

  • Experience with web development

  • Experience with NEON CRM

  • Working knowledge of one or more issues: environmental justice, climate justice, economic development and tenants’ rights

Work Environment

  • This is a hybrid position. We are looking for candidates in the Chicago area who are able to work mainly remotely and attend meetings and events in-person when it is safe to do so.
