A FEW FACTS:
- Prior to COVID, Black people in Chicago have experienced savage health disparities across communities. Many factors that contribute to poor health outcomes – including poverty, community disinvestment and high unemployment – are seen at higher levels in Chicago’s black communities.
- Prior to COVID, there was a Life Expectancy Gap in Chicago driven by Race and Segregation. White residents of Streeterville on the Near North Side could expect to live to an average age of 90, but residents of Englewood, an overwhelmingly African American community just 9 miles away on the South Side, dropped to 60.
- We are in the middle of a global pandemic. Decades of inequality and institutional racism affecting Black communities has become evident in Covid-19 data, There are significant racial disparities in deaths and coronavirus cases across the city.
- According to the Chicago Department of Public Health in Chicago, Black Americans account for 68% of the city’s deaths and 52% of the roughly 5,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, despite making up just 30% of the city’s population! Black people are dying at a rate nearly 6X that of white Chicagoans
- Several hospitals in the Black community have closed in the Bronzeville community in recent years including Michael Reese. Provident Hospital, Trinity and St. Bernard all on the South side are underfunded and on life support.
- We deserve fully funded hospitals in Bronzeville and across the city and state in Black, Brown and immigrant communities.
- There has been a systematic disinvestment in Black communities and we say #EquityorElse! We won’t sit by and watch vital, basic quality of life institutions being stolen from our communities!

Gas and Electric Shutoffs Discontinued!
The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has passed consumer protections to help people struggling to pay their utility bills amid the COVID-19 crisis. In Chicago, these protections cover the private investor owned electric and gas companies – ComEd and Peoples Gas.
If you have been disconnected from your electricity or gas service, you can call either utility to be reconnected and access financial assistance and other protections.
Even if you are currently connected but you are experiencing financial hardship OR are eligible for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), you can call either utility to receive special financial assistance and other protections.
To start the process, please call your respective utility and state your financial hardship verbally:
Additional details on the benefits provided through the protections are covered below.
